When Paper Fans Meet Fine Art

Ethnic Breezes, an exhibit of work by Diane Speas Faison, is currently on display at the Mebane Arts and Community Center.

Faison creates beautiful homemade fans, combining traditional symbols and designs of both African American and Native American cultures. All work displayed is mixed-media. Much of this media are natural materials, such as dryer lint, cattail pulp, tree bark, saw dust, crushed leaves, and even animal hair.

The Mebane Arts and Community Center is free and open to the public, so you may view her artwork any time Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm.

Faison is a native of Winston Salem, North Carolina and was educated in the public schools of Winston Salem. She received her undergraduate in Art from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Her graduate studies expand from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.

Diane’s career in art education spans over twenty-five years while teaching in the public schools of Virginia. She is now retired, and living back in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
