Mastering the Art of Smart People Talk

In the land of academia, there’s what I like to call “smart people talk.” The discussion arises at a party or a local fundraiser, and topics range from the upcoming presidential debate to the fundamentals of teaching high school English. Smart people talk is used the way it sounds: to smarten the speaker up and dumb the listeners down. Like the majority of us, you’ve been a victim of smart people talk, and I’m here to tell you there's better ways to talk back without swallowing an encyclopedia.

Here's your own conversation starter: Do you know how to get a lion to paint a canvas?

Yes, I know. You can’t just say things and make up a story as you go along, even though many smart people talkers do. In order to follow up your intriguing question with sincerity, you need to attend the Lunch and Learn event hosted by Emily Jaffe of the Conservators Center.

Emily graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry and a minor in Education. After spending time as their Education and Guest Relations Associate, she is now the Business Relations Supervisor at the Conservators Center. Emily grew up in Ohio adoring animals and took that love with her as she ventured to North Carolina and eventually the Conservators Center in Caswell County.

The Lunch and Learn event plans to educate those interested in the Wild Paws on Canvas Exhibit regarding the creation of the works and the mission of the Center. Participants are asked to bring a bagged lunch to the Captain White House, while Alamance Arts promises beverages and dessert. During your lunch break, Emily plans to discuss the painting process and show a video that most will not see during their visit to the exhibit.

There are over 50 original works by the animals adorning the walls of the SunTrust Gallery from now through September 4th. Not only are the paintings and the biography of their artist available for viewing, they’re also available for purchase. All proceeds go to the Conservators Center as a nonprofit organization.

The animals at the Center have been painting for almost a decade, giving them a fun way to express themselves and interact with their two-legged friends. Emily will discuss how they were able to inspire the animals to engage with the canvas, so plan to be attentive from noon to 1 p.m. Master the art of smart-people-talk with this interesting presentation so that next time, you won’t have trouble navigating through the land of academia.

What’s your best “smart people talk” story? Feel free to share on the blog, and we hope to see you at the Captain White house from noon to 1 p.m. on August 21st! Remember, bring a bag lunch and we’ll provide the beverage and dessert.
